The Team

Arran Thorburn, partner

Gabe Sullens, partner

We are two partners with a collective 40+ years in the bike industry and are committed to delivering the best retail presentation along with a peerless level of service to match.  Our many years working for and managing leading retailers followed by careers in the supply side of the bike world gave us a great understanding of brands, product, fitting, retail presentation, community engagement, and service levels that are required to build and maintain a successful bicycle shop.  We’ve joined forces to both work on, and in the shop to ensure it has the look and feel of a proper “third place”, a place you can call a home away from home to share your enthusiasm and passion with like-minded people.

Gabe Sullens

Gabe’s been riding bikes since six years of age, and never stopped.  Growing up in rural Ohio in the USA, he started by riding his BMX down rocky creekbeds and dirt roads, graduated to riding on the road for fun and then to get to class in college.  The trips to the local bike shop was always a treat and he learned the value of a knowledgeable and experienced mechanic when trying to fix and maintain his equipment.  After moving to California, he worked in and ran several sporting goods stores with bike departments and then was lucky to join the management team at one of the world’s most successful bike retail chains, Supergo Bike Shops.  Leading the legendary Wednesdy Nightride in the local Santa Monica Mtns for seven years was a highlight, building the reputation of a solid group ride leader.  Specialized Bikes recruited Gabe to northern California where he founded their global retail education and development department, Specialized University (SBCU).  After traveling and working with retailers around the world, he relocated to develop the Taiwan market, then on to Australia to do the same.   A couple years later he joined Cannondale here in Australia as national sales manager.  Working with most of the best bike shops in Australia and New Zealand inspired him to blog about best practices and his columns currently published quarterly in Bike Trade magazine.  He’s fluent in “bike” as he has ridden and competed in cross country, downhill, enduro, road, and cyclocross, and has also taught hundreds of others to ride on and offroad including his two step kids here in Melbourne.  Retail is his passion and he intends to make Urban Pedaler one of the leading shops in the world of bike retail.
